The same message, both channels, side by side.
SMS charges by the segment; WhatsApp charges by the conversation. For a short reminder they’re close — for anything long or media-rich, they diverge fast. Paste your message and your rates to see which channel actually costs less for this send.
Important: WhatsApp’s official Business Platform restricts political and electoral use — the per-message pricing above applies to Platform senders, who often can’t run campaign content. The free WhatsApp apps and click-to-chat links have no per-message cost but can’t blast a list. Pick the channel your audience and your use case both allow.
WhatsApp prices are Meta’s marketing rate card for the selected market and currency. The SMS figure is an editable estimate — an average of published A2P list prices (Twilio, Infobip, Brevo), shown for European markets and North America and converted to other currencies at approximate FX. Replace it with your provider’s quote for an exact comparison.
WhatsApp rates from the WhaTools WhatsApp API Pricing Calculator, which tracks Meta’s per-message rate card; see the full price history for how these have changed. Marketing-category rates (the ones that apply to political and promotional outreach), per delivered template message, across every market and currency Meta publishes, current as of August 2026. The market and currency default to your location; change either to reprice.

Two very different meters
Understanding how each channel bills you is most of the decision. Cost is only half of it — reach and permission are the other half.
| SMS | ||
|---|---|---|
| Billing unit | Per 160/70-char segment | Per message / 24h conversation |
| Length & emoji | Raise the cost | Free |
| Images, video, voice | Not supported (MMS is separate/pricey) | Included |
| Reaches | Every phone, no app | Only WhatsApp users |
| Political broadcasts | Allowed (with opt-in + registration) | Restricted on the Business Platform |
The honesty rule
WhatsApp can look dramatically cheaper on paper, but the official platform’s restrictions on political and electoral messaging mean many campaigns simply can’t use it for broadcasts without risking a ban. Price it, but confirm you’re actually allowed to send what you plan to send.
